Prolonged sitting has many negative effects on your body.
Almost everything in our society is designed around sitting. Whether you are at your desk, in your car, on your couch or at the dinner table, you are sitting. Prolonged sitting can increase your risk of heart disease by 64%, take away up to 7 quality years off of your life and put you at a much higher risk for developing some types of cancer, just to name a few of the many health issues that arise from sitting. Luckily, there are a couple of small changes you can make to counteract the negative effects of sitting:
#1. Take hourly breaks.
One study from Australia found that taking a short break every hour can help to alleviate most of the health problems that come from sitting all day. You don’t even have to move around or do anything exciting, just stand up once an hour for a few minutes. To remind yourself, set a timer or an alert on your computer.
#2. Get active for at least 30 minutes every day.
You don’t have to start lifting weights or attending a CrossFit class, a little bit of moderate activity will go a long way. Moderate activity can be anything from a brisk walk to yard work –basically whatever gets you up and moving. Don’t have time to exercise for 30 minutes straight? No problem, you can break it up into shorter sessions if you need to.
