Back pain makes many things much more difficult, and unfortunately, an astounding 80% of the population will have to cope with back pain at some point during their lifetime. The good news is that back pain doesn’t always come from injury, and there are many lifestyle changes you can make to prevent or minimize your back pain. The following is a list from our talented team of Santa Fe chiropractors of lifestyle choices that often lead to back pain:

#1.  Sitting for a long period of time.

Sitting all day long is hard on your body in many ways, and your back is no exception. Sitting actually puts 40% more pressure on your spine than standing does. If you sit all day at work, take a minute or so every 30 minutes to stand up and move around.

#2. Not getting your exercise.

Exercise is not only important for keeping a trim figure, it also promotes strong muscles, which help to support the spine. When you don’t exercise, your muscles become weak and your spinal discs start to degenerate.

#3. Not eating a healthy diet.

If you don’t eat a healthy diet, it leads to weight gain. Excess weight, especially if you carry it around your midsection, pulls your pelvis forwards and puts stress on your lower back.

#4. Smoking cigarettes.

Smoking cigarettes causes back pain in two ways. It reduces calcium absorption, which prevents new bones from growing. Nicotine from cigarettes also restricts the flow of blood to the discs that are responsible for cushioning your vertebrae.
